When you are sad don’t avoid being sad. Just get up and do something to be happy.

I person was screaming and shouting at everyone around. I asked him what is the problem. He said that I am feeling angry and I know it is not right. Why are you feeling angry and he said that I have been very sad but I should not be and that frustrated me and that is why I started feeling angry and because I know I should not be angry, it is making me further angry. I have been trying to suppress my emotions and more I suppress, more they are bouncing back. And who told you that you shall not feel angry or sad? He was surprised with the question and said that it has always been told to us that we shall not get angry, we shall not be sad, we would always be happy. Yes, we have been told that but who said that whatever has been told is always to be followed? Second thing, if we shall not be angry or sad, why are these emotions given to us? More over, there is a difference between feeling angry and not getting angry. And it shall be a natural flow rather than suppressing the emotions. Emotions are like visitors, they come and go. If we try to stop them, they would be harder. It is like if someone is knocking at your door and if you try not to open the door, knocking would get harder. But if you open the door, the visitor would come, have a cup of tea and go back. So what shall be done?

First of all accept that yes I am sad today and I have right to be sad. I have right to feel the way I am feeling. I have right to my emotions. It is not wrong to feel sad. I can feel sad if it is making me feel over certain things like I have lost a deal, so I can be sad. I am allowed to be sad. I do not have to pretend that I am happy and it does not affect me. If it matters to me, then yes it does matter to me, does not matter how big or small thing is.
Once you accept your emotions, you are in a better position to deal with them. Mostly half of the sadness would be gone as it would have own place.
After accepting, get up and do something to cheer yourself up. Do something which gives you a sense of achievement, it could be even fixing a watch or planting a tree. Get moving, get your energy moving. It is like sadness is like stacked up energy and when you move, the energy shuffles and you would feel better. Or take a walk! Do something.

Do not avoid your emotions, they drive our energy and define who we are. We have a right ti feel they way we feel. We shall be happy but we can be happy when we have understood other emotions too.
