When we are born, we are told that we must respect our elders and we do that as we trust them. Then we are told that we must respect our teachers and we do that as we trust them that whatever they are doing is for our betterment. When we start working we know we should respect our bosses as they are the leader and we know we have given our careers in their hand, they are more knowledgeable and they would make us grow. Somewhere we start losing that respect and we feel we are outgrowing that. We are then forced to respect people whom we feel we shall not, why is it so?
When we grow we build our own parameters, own criteria to see this world and we judge people as per those. Because of age or higher pedestal if we are asked to, we may pretend but we may not do that by heart. When we judge their actions and trust them, then we respect them. We do not respect every leader or politician we just respect a few like Mr Modi or Nitish Kumar as we know they have worked for the betterment of the country and have kept their words.
You cannot force anyone to respect you, people see your actions, they judge them and then they respect by heart. If they are forced because of the pedestal, that would just be pretence. If you want to win their respect implement that in your actions. You would never have to force anyone to do that or you would never have a complain that they are bitching about you on your back. You always have to earn the respect, you cannot force it. So many times, I have seen parents complaining that their kids do not respect them but I ask them if they have done something which would break their trust and they say no, but when they evaluate, they know it like they did not keep their words sometimes or their actions did not align with their words. Kids do not follow what you say, they follow what you do, so mange your actions and you would always be respected by heart. If you want to be respected, do not break anyones trust because you are respected by someone, only when they trust you.
