If you want to connect with the God, connect with the self. Understand yourself first. Accept yourself just as you are. Reach to your own source as this source is common to all and this source is God. This source is inside you. Your God is inside you. Expect from yourself first. You are there in everything and every being through this source as this source is common to all. Once you realize your own presence and own existence you will connect to the God.
People go to great length to connect to the God, they goto exiles, they wear saffrons, they renounce the world, once there was a king and he renounced his kingdom to connect with the God. He started living his life under a tree in the jungle. Once, there was one saint passing by n decided to rest under the tree shade. When the king returned, he asked the saint to leave the tree and declared that it is his place. The saint said that who so ever is bigger by karma deserves the place. The king said I have renounced entire world to connect to the God hence I am a more deservant candidate. The saint said where have you renounced?
Just going to exile does not help. You keep searching it outside and you forget what you are. You forget that you are being living on same source. It is inside you. If you go away from your own nature how can you connect to God, you need to understand your own nature first, cleanse it, purify it and then see everything clearly in the light of God. If you want to connect to the God, connect to self first. Farther you go away from self, farther you go away from God.
