After an accident my friend went through depression at the age of 65. She stopped talking to anyone and she confined herself to one room. One day while going to meet doctor, she saw a child begging on the road. She gave him biscuits which she had bought for her home. The child was very happy and said that she was the most generous lady he had ever met. She started smiling. She did not smile for the ego but seeing that child so happy. She asked her husband if she could buy more biscuits and visit the slums same time. He agreed as he really wanted to see her happy. When they came back home, she was feeling lightest and happiest in last many months. She started visiting them regularly, to help them, to spend time with them and to do whatever she could do. More and more she was doing for others, more and more she was getting healed. What doctors could not do, her compassion did. One day, a gentleman from the slums said that you do so much for us and she said that I am not obliging you, it is my own need. You don’t even know what I am receiving by doing this.
It’s true. When we help someone, we help ourselves. We heal ourselves. We heal a part of ourselves which is in need. We heal a part of this Universe. We support this Universe.
Everyone is connected and everyone is a part of this Universe. We all are one. So if one part is in need or not happy then another par has to come forward to help. It’s like if you have a problem in one hand, then another hand supports it, it will not say I have obliged by helping you. There is no obligation because it’s one body. Same way, it’s one body. If one part is in need, another one supports and it’s the need of whole body because then only everything can be truly happy and healthy.
